A gear reducer (also called a gear reduction unit or gearhead) is a mechanical device that reduces the speed of an input motor or engine while
increasing its output torque. It consists of interlocking gears arranged in specific configurations to achieve the desired speed reduction and power
transmission.
How a Gear Reducer Works:
Input Shaft: Connects to a motor or power source (e.g., electric motor, engine).
Gear Train: A series of gears with different tooth counts mesh together to reduce speed:
A smaller drive gear (input) turns a larger driven gear (output), slowing rotation.
The gear ratio determines the reduction (e.g., 10:1 means the output shaft turns once for every 10 turns of the input).
Output Shaft: Delivers reduced speed and increased torque to the load (e.g., conveyor, pump, vehicle wheels).
Types of Gear Reducers:
Parallel Shaft Gear Reducers (e.g., spur gears, helical gears) – Common in industrial machinery.
Right-Angle Gear Reducers (e.g., bevel gears, worm gears) – Used when space requires a 90° direction change.
Planetary Gear Reducers – Compact, high torque, and efficient (common in robotics and automotive systems).
Worm Gear Reducers – Provide high reduction ratios and self-locking (but lower efficiency).
